From Ravel with Mussorgsky to Stokowski with Bach, composers have highlighted the colors of the orchestra by drawing on previously-written pieces for keyboard. Whether enlarged from their own piece or that of another, master orchestrators invite audiences to enjoy unique melodies, harmonies, and timbres from that of the piano originals. Musicfest Program Annotator Fran Rosenthal takes us on a survey of some of the orchestrational masterpieces, offering insight into the process and palate these composers used.
