Trombone Jazz

Join us for our bi-monthly music-listening book club!

To celebrate Gunhild Carling’s dazzling turn on the Musicfest stage, we’ll enjoy a jazz playlist highlighting some of the great Jazz trombonists! Carling, a multi-instrumentalist , has noted that her favorite instrument love trombone, and so we’ll explore some of the musicians that have inspired her. From familiar bandleaders like Buddy Rich and Glenn Miller to Juan Tizol, Duke Ellington’s co-writer on Caravan, and contemporary greats like Trombone Shorty and Wycliffe Gordon, we’ll celebrate the wide array of tunes these great musicians have put together!

As you listen to this playlist, do you notice any uniquely inflections that are unique to the trombone? With such an array of musicians, are there some performer’s styles you prefer over others? Are there ones you find more technical and others more lyrical? We’ll discuss these questions and more when we get together for our first Music and Muffins of 2023!
