Child Ballads

Join us for our bi-monthly music-listening book club!

In anticipation of Mark O’Connor’s Appalachian Christmas show, we’ll review a playlist of tunes collected by the musicologist Francis J Child, who was responsible for the some of the first catalogues English and Scottish ballads, which became the foundation of what we consider “Appalachian” music. As you listen to the playlist, are any of the tunes familiar to you? Are there other performances of the tunes that you enjoy as well? What other pieces come to mind as you hear these?
